MANILA, Philippines – “Sisiguruhin ko na mag-cha-champion kami.” [I will see to it that we will win the championship.]
This was Dir. Gen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa’s answer when Mr. Public Service, Kuya Daniel Razon, asked him during the live morning show, Get It Straight With Daniel Razon in UNTV, if he would be playing for team PNP Respondents on UNTV CUP.
When told that PNP Respondents always lose the Championship game to team Cavaliers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), he gamely threw his punchline – “Noon yun, dahil hindi pa ako ang Chief PNP.” [That was then because I was not yet the Chief PNP.]
He explained that they used to have such basketball league in Davao City. It was organized and sponsored by its former Mayor and now the President of the Philippines, Honorable Rodrigo Duterte, with over half a million cash prize. But when Razon told him that the UNTV CUP Champion Team will take home P4 million, he was utterly surprised. “Apat na milyon?!” [Four million?!]. He exclaimed in awe.
“Yung magagaling kong player doon sa Davao dalhin ko dito. Marami akong magagaling na player doon. Dadalhin ko dito.” He quipped as he is determined to win the Season 5 of UNTV CUP Championship.
UNTV Cup The Next Game
The opening of the UNTV CUP Season 5 will be held on August 29, 2016 at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Meanwhile, it can be remembered that on Season 4, UNTV CUP gave out a total of Php8 million as cash prize.
The PNP Respondents got Php2 million as they landed the 2nd place after losing the game to AFP Cavaliers who won the Championship with Php4 million cash prize. Consequently, the team Blackwolves of MMDA came in third place with Php1 million cash prize, while the HA Builders ranked 4th place received Php500,000. The other eight non-winning teams each received Php100,000 as consolation prize.
UNTV CUP is the only basketball league on TV that features government officials from various agencies and branches of the Philippine government. Public service is the premier purpose of this endeavour as each team plays to win for their respective agencies and their chosen charities.
The game house rules patterns the same rules used by FIBA. This was launched during the 9th anniverssary of UNTV on July 29, 2013.
It was spearheaded and conceptualized by the UNTV-BMPI’s chairman and CEO, Kuya Daniel Razon, with the primary goal of helping the government to reach more people, especially the less fortunate.
